Job Hunters' Treasure Map – X marks the best job creation; gold coins mark lowest unemployment
Overall, state unemployment remained fairly stable in March 2010. While February 2010 saw an increase in unemployment rates in many states, March saw the situation remain fairly stable. Some states saw changes in the unemployment rate, but, for the most part, job creation was most successful on the East Coast.
Story continues after video...
Colorado, Montana and Nebraska all saw significant increases in the unemployment rate. Massachusetts, though, saw a significant decrease in its unemployment rate. Nearly everyone else saw insignificant changes. Job creation, though, seems to be picking up in some areas.
In terms of job creation, Maryland led the pack, adding 35,000 jobs. Maryland was followed by Virginia with 24,500 added jobs, and Pennsylvania with 22,600 jobs added. Indiana also saw a reasonable increase in jobs, adding 16,600 to the economy. As you can see the East Coast seems to be picking up.
Job losses were also a part of the state employment picture in March 2010. As expected, the state with the highest unemployment rate, Michigan, also continues to see the largest amount of job losses with 9,500. Nevada (7,100 job losses) and Florida (4,000) also continue to shed jobs. However, the rate of job loss appears to be slowing across the country.
The employment situation still remains challenging, even though some states are starting to add significant numbers of jobs to their economies. In order to land a job in this economy, you will need to be willing to go where job creation is taking place and show yourself a top candidate. Right now, that seems to be the East Coast, but the situation remains fluid, and it will be some time before stability returns to the job market.
