State Employment Declines in 27 States

Treasure map of jobs in the USA, June 2010

Job Hunters' Treasure Map – where you have the best chance of finding and keeping a job

After seeing employment increases in most states in May 2010, the story has changed a bit in June. Most states, 27 of them, saw decreases in employment. However, it wasn’t all bad: 21 states, along with the District of Columbia, saw increases in non-farm payrolls. Two states remained unchanged from May.

Story continues after video...

Much of the decreases in state employment for the month of June are being blamed on an end to Census hiring. Analysts believe that many of the recent increases in monthly employment were due to Census hiring. Now that the Census is winding down, and these temporary jobs are disappearing, decreases in state employment are expected.

The biggest decrease in employment took place in California, a state that lost 27,600 jobs. Budget concerns in California are probably still taking their toll, and the state is having a hard time getting back on its feet. Other states that saw significant decreases in employment include New York (losing 22,500 jobs), Tennessee (with a loss of 20,800 jobs) and Arizona (losing 11,700 jobs).

Bright spots still remain on the jobs front, though. Texas continues to shine as a good place to look for a job. For the second month in a row, Texas added more jobs than any other state, with 14,000. Other encouraging employment situations are all in the south for June, with Kentucky (increase of 6,200 jobs), Arkansas (added 6,000 jobs), and Louisiana (added 5,800 jobs). However, these job increases seem kind of small after looking at the large job losses in states on the West and East coasts.

It is likely that the employment situation will continue to experience some setbacks. It seems as though good months are often followed by discouraging months. With the economic recovery moving forward in fits and starts, and advancing sluggishly overall, it is little surprise that the jobs situation isn’t showing some serious improvement. Indeed, the job situation is likely to remain somewhat discouraging for some time to come.
